What: Kickoff event for the Young Women’s Preparatory Network’s Girls Innovate: STEM Challenge
Where: NorthPark Center
PC Moment: Let the games begin! NorthPark Center hosted eager participants of the Young Women’s Preparatory Network’s Girls Innovate: YWPN STEM Challenge for a kickoff celebration that included a scavenger hunt, lunch, and various STEM (Science, Technology, Reading ,and Math) activities in the Microsoft store. STEM – along with leadership, college readiness, and wellness life skills – is a key focus of schools in the YWPN network, which have been recognized as among the best public schools in the nation.
The YWPN’s public-private partnership with school districts across Texas has given more than 4,500 young women the chance for a brighter future and proudly boasts 100 percent high school graduation and college acceptance rates. Designed as a deliberate effort to keep girls engaged in STEM-related fields, the inaugural YWPN STEM Challenge will take place this Saturday, November 4 at NorthPark Center.
From 1 to 4 p.m., the girls will present projects they’ve been working on all semester and will work with adult mentors to solve “real-life” STEM challenges. After the demonstration, the top teams will be announced and recognized with prizes and awards. Visitors can vote at the event for $1 per vote or go online to www.youngwomensprep.com
